Cathy is the professional skating coach for the NHL Sharks organization. She has been a professional skating development coach for 40 years, and exclusively hockey skating, for the past 25 years. Her methods and accomplishments have been recognized nationally for her work with hockey players in the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, NHL.com, San Jose Sharks Making Waves & Undercurrent episodes, and various podcasts and local publications. She is a member coach and presenter for both the NHL Coaches' Association (NHLCA)- Female Development Program, as well as The Coaches Site.
 
Cathy's pro coaching career started in Calgary, Canada (1984) after she achieved (CFSA/Skate Canada) Triple Gold Figure Skating & NCCP coaching certifications. Cathy is widely regarded as one of the West Coast's premier hockey skating development coaches and has taught tens of thousands of lessons to athletes ranging from youth minor level hockey players through NCAA Division I, PWHPA, OHL, AHL, KHL, USA National Team, Olympic Team members & NHL over the past four decades. Cathy's son, Cameron, first stepped on the ice at 18 months old. Cameron played travel hockey for the Jr. Sharks competing at multiple levels ranging from A to AAA. He held the captaincy for both Junior Sharks AAA and Valley Christian High School hockey teams. He then went on to play ACHA D2 ice hockey at Loyola Marymount University. There, he was an alternate captain and graduated second in franchise history for points as a defenseman. Cameron has coached the Power Hour series since 2014 and demonstrates drills and techniques in addition to programming & coaching. He has been an integral part of expanding the Power Hour series around the Bay Area and beyond. Cameron has worked privately with youth teams, through 18AAA teams plus he has his own private lesson business working with players weekly throughout the year. Together the Andrade coaching team has launched the first year round power skating school in the bay area which offers daily skating practices. At Extra Hour, California's largest off ice hockey training facility, he is in charge of all mini rink programs and an array of classes that specialize on agility edge work, body control, and many other aspects of skating.

Currently, Cameron works full time as a Power Hour and Extra Hour coach, 19AAA Sharks Girls skating coach, and San Jose State University (SJSU) skating coach.

Logan Speelman

Logan was a longtime client of Cathy's Power Skating (CPS). When he was 14, Logan played for his first junior hockey team, Billings Bulls (AWHL) and went on to lead his 16AAA team with most points. Logan also played for the Colorado Rampage (AAA) and won 2 championships. He went on to play for the Bay State Breakers (USPHL) and currently playing for San Jose State (SJSU). Logan's dynamic speed, edge work and balance are all attributed to his fast, fluid skating which makes him a great example for the youth skaters who train at Extra Hour and participate in Power Hour sessions.

Salvatore Barranco

Coach Salvatore grew up in the Bay Area playing for the Jr. Sharks, Blackhawks, and Cougars.  He went on to play for San Jose State University where he was an alternate captain graduated first in franchise history with most points as a defenseman and top ten all-time in points among forwards/defensemen. Sal has head coached multiple teams, ranging from AAA (2x) to A (4x) and won 2 NorCal and 2 CAHA State Championships as coach. 
 
Sal's 15 years of coaching experience has allowed him to work directly with members of the USA Hockey Development Coaching Program and obtain his level 4 coaching certifications.

Matthew Ng

Former Power Hour student, Matt Ng, grew up playing hockey in California for the Jr. Sharks & Jr. Kings. In his freshman year, Matt ranked second at the U14AAA level (33G, 33A) in 46 games. This led him to being drafted and signed by the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Matt proceeded to play for the prestigious Culver Military Academy where he held a leadership role while posting 60 points in two seasons. He went on to play for the Everett Silvertips where he suited up for 64 games and helped his team to a U.S. Division and Western Conference title. Despite his lack of size, Matt used his speed, edge work, and puck skills to take his game to the highest level in junior hockey. His skills have been recognized by TSN, Pavel Barber and local news affiliates. 

 

During Matt's playing career, he was fortunate to learn from many great coaches, which has inspired him to be involved in the community that he grew up in.

Yulia Mikhaylova


  • Power Hour Coach


Yulia’s has ten years of professional ice-skating instruction experience teaching both group and private lessons for the figure skaters and hockey players from entry to advanced levels and focuses on improving balance, edge work, and agility.


Taught power skating clinics for travel team hockey players to improve their speed and skating skills for 8U, 10U and 12U hockey teams. Teaching both team practices and private lessons for the hockey players.


Professional background:


Originally trained under the direction of Russia’s leading coaches. Six years of competitive experience through the senior level in singles and ice dancing followed by a 15‐year career as a professional skating performer, including eleven years with St. Petersburg Theater on Ice (principal skater) and four years with Disney on Ice (ensemble skater/understudy).


Yulia is also a USA Hockey certified level 3 hockey coach.

Nick Checklenis


  • Power Hour & Extra Hour Goalie Coach


Coach Nick has been on the ice since the age of 4. Growing up in the Bay Area, he spent his youth playing with the Santa Clara Blackhawks and the San Jose Jr. Sharks organizations. Nick has attended numerous camps and trained with players from junior to professional level. Recently, 2021-2022 season, Nick played for the San Jose State Spartans (ACHA). 



Currently, Nick coaches for the Jr. Sharks organization and trains the AAA and AA boys and girls from ages 12 through 19 years old. With his knowledge, experience, and passion for the position, coach Nick can advance the skills of any goaltender's style of play by adding the most creative, effective, and efficient techniques.

Chris Dysart


  • Power Hour & Extra Hour Coach


Chris grew up playing youth hockey in the Bay Area for the Cougars, Capital Thunder 13U AA, and the San Jose Jr. Sharks AAA from 14U to 18U. In 2019, Chris moved on to play college hockey for the San Jose State Spartans. He eventually began serving as the team's captain during the 2021-22 season and continues to hold the position today.


Chris began coaching youth summer camps with the Jr. Sharks in 2019. His goal was to be more involved with the hockey community and offer his knowledge of the game to future generations of players. Chris is a believer in practicing and improving individual skills such as stride and edge work, stickhandling, puck control, and shooting. With his passion for hockey and playing experience, Chris looks forward to helping players hone their skills and advance their game.

Pierce Stotzner


  • Power Hour & Extra Hour Coach


Pierce is a San Jose native who grew up playing for the Santa Clara Blackhawks, the Jr Sharks, the Cupertino Cougars, and the Tri Valley Bulls. He has played at levels from A to AAA and won a NAPHL championship with the Tri Valley Bulls. After his 18U season, Pierce started working as a coach for Power Hour… a program he grew up participating in. Pierce later moved to helping at Extra Hour as a shooting and stick handling coach. 

Saahil Ahuja

Saahil grew up playing hockey in San Jose where he started taking lessons and attending Power Hour classes when he was 13. Shortly after taking lessons, he was able to play tier level hockey for the Jr. Sharks, where he was assistant captain multiple years. He then attended the University of Arizona where he played for their ACHA Division 1 club hockey team. Saahil has coached power hour for 6+ years and cares greatly for all young hockey players to be taught to skate through right way.

DJ Powell

With over a decade of hockey experience, DJ brings a wealth of hockey knowledge and passion to coaching. Currently balancing academics along with San Jose Jr Sharks AAA & varsity ice hockey at Bellarmine College Prep, DJ understands the importance of dedication and teamwork both on and off the rink.


Having been a student of Cathy for years, DJ has experienced firsthand the power of development. Now, as a coach, he is committed to paying it forward, helping young athletes develop not only their hockey skills but also important life values like perseverance and sportsmanship. DJ takes great pride in the opportunity to shape the futures of aspiring players, and he is excited to contribute positively to their journeys both on and off the ice.

Caden Ghiossi

Caden has been participating in (Cathy’s) Power Skating for many years attending summer camps, Power Hour, and private lessons. He has also been a longtime player for the Jr Sharks, where he currently leads his 18AAA team in points. Caden has always been very undersized growing up, so his skating and stability was a necessity throughout his development. The continual work Caden puts into his skating has allowed him to become a very effective skater. Caden's stability, quickness, and ability to transform skating drills into game situations, makes him a dynamic coach. Caden became a coach, in the Spring of 2021, and has been an effective part of Cathy’s Power Skating ever since.

Sean, a native of San Jose, grew up playing for the Santa Clara Blackhawks and NorCal Rep Club. At age 13, he became one of Cathy's first private hockey students. Beginning in 1997, Sean began assisting Cathy with Power Hour and became a private instructor. After his playing career that included Jr. A hockey in Alberta, college hockey in New England and Buffalo, NY, and minor pro stops in Fresno and Knoxville, Sean returned to the Bay Area and resumed coaching private lessons and San Jose Jr. Sharks teams. Sean has worked with students who have ultimately reached the NHL, AHL, CHL, and NCAA levels. Sean is also a Level 4 USA hockey certified and SafeSport trained.

Austin Billings

Austin Billings began his hockey journey at age 4 in the San Jose Sharks In-House league, quickly excelling through their Tier program. At 9, he started private coaching with Cathy during her Power Hour sessions, which significantly shaped his development. Austin's leadership and skill made him a standout on his Jr. Sharks team, consistently earning captaincy roles throughout his youth. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), he became a key player, serving as assistant captain and captain. Austin earned LMU's Athlete of the Year award twice, selected for All-Conference 2nd Team, finished 4th in all-time points, and was recognized for his exceptional skating. 


Since 2017, Austin has coached in Power Hour series under the leadership of Cathy and Cameron.
